Why You Need an NEPC Certificate

The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) is the Federal Government agency responsible for regulating and promoting non-oil exports in Nigeria.

Customs officials at seaports and airports will automatically seize commercial goods if the exporting company does not present a valid NEPC Exporter's Certificate. This document is the ultimate gateway to international trade.

Earn Foreign Exchange

Exporting allows you to earn directly in US Dollars, Euros, or Pounds. The NEPC certificate is required to open a Domiciliary Export Proceeds Account with any Nigerian bank.

Access to Government Grants

Certified exporters are eligible for the Export Expansion Grant (EEG) and various CBN intervention funds designed to boost local production.

Seamless Customs Clearance

Avoid devastating delays and the confiscation of your perishable goods at the ports. The NEPC certificate guarantees smooth clearance by the Nigerian Customs Service.

What Can You Export?

An NEPC license authorizes your registered business to export any legally permissible non-oil goods, including:

Agricultural Produce (Cocoa, Cashew, Sesame, Ginger)
Solid Minerals (Lead, Zinc, Lithium, Charcoal)
Manufactured Goods & Textiles
Handicrafts & Cultural Artifacts

NEPC Registration Requirements

Applying for an export license requires strict adherence to corporate compliance. Your company must be fully registered and tax-compliant before the NEPC will approve your application.

  • CAC Certificate of Incorporation: You MUST be registered as a Limited Liability Company (LTD) or a Cooperative Society. (Note: Ordinary Business Names/Enterprises are NOT permitted to export solid minerals).
  • Memorandum and Articles of Association (MEMART): One of the stated "Objects" in your MEMART must explicitly mention "Export" or "General Trade".
  • Corporate TIN (Tax Identification Number): Issued by FIRS in your company's name.
  • Passport Photograph & ID: A passport photo and valid government ID of one of the company Directors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions regarding international trade and NEPC certification in Nigeria.

Can a Business Name (Enterprise) get an Export License?

A registered Business Name CANNOT get an export license for solid minerals or crude materials. However, a Business Name can get a limited NEPC certificate to export agricultural produce, handicrafts, and manufactured goods. For complete flexibility, we highly recommend upgrading to a Limited Liability Company (LTD).

Does the NEPC license expire?

Yes. A fresh NEPC Export Certificate is valid for exactly two (2) years from the date of issue. After that, it must be renewed to continue exporting goods legally.

What happens if my CAC document doesn't have "Export" in the objects?

The NEPC portal will reject your application instantly. If your MEMART does not state that your company is authorized to engage in "Export", we will first need to file a "Change of Objects" with the CAC to amend your constitution before applying for the license.

Do I need a SCUML Certificate to export?

No, SCUML is not required by NEPC to grant an export license. However, depending on the volume of foreign currency you receive, your commercial bank might request a SCUML certificate down the line to process heavy inflows.
